Blue drinks stop people in their tracks. There's something about that vivid, electric blue color that makes everyone reach for their phone to take a photo before they even take a sip. Blue mocktails are the showstoppers of any drink menu — they look expensive, they look complicated, and they look like something you'd pay fifteen dollars for at a rooftop bar. The secret? Most of them are shockingly easy to make.
The two main ways to get a natural blue color in mocktails are butterfly pea flower tea and blue curaçao syrup (non-alcoholic version). Butterfly pea flower is my preferred method — it's a natural ingredient, it creates a deep, gorgeous blue, and here's the magic trick: when you add citrus to it, it turns purple. So you can create color-changing drinks that blow people's minds at parties.
Blue mocktails work for almost any occasion. Baby boy showers, pool parties, Fourth of July (paired with red and white drinks), ocean-themed events, winter wonderland parties, or just a Tuesday when you want something that makes you feel fancy. The color is so striking that even a simple recipe looks like a masterpiece.
One important note from my testing: avoid artificial blue food coloring if you can. It stains everything (lips, teeth, countertops, white shirts) and the taste is never quite right. Butterfly pea flower tea is tasteless and stain-free, and blue curaçao syrup adds a pleasant orange flavor without the mess.
